HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Preparation is your strongest defense. As we enter the 2025 hurricane season, ensure your emergency plan is up to date, supplies are stocked, and all household or team members know what to do before, during, and after a storm. Taking action now can protect lives, property, and peace of mind when a hurricane threatens.

Business continuity starts with preparedness. Government agencies and business offices must ensure that emergency plans are current, staff are trained, critical data is backed up, and communication procedures are clearly established. Proactive planning helps protect employees, safeguard assets, and maintain essential operations during and after a hurricane.

FORECAST FOR THE 2025 HURRICANE SEASON

The National Hurricane Center predicts an exceptionally active season, forecasting between 13 to 19 named storms.

Out of these storms, 6 to 10 could potentially develop into hurricanes, with 3 to 5 reaching major hurricane status (Category 3 or stronger).

Emphasis is placed on the importance of preparedness and resilience in facing potential risks associated with hurricanes and tropical storms.

While coastal communities are typically impacted, inland areas can also suffer from damaging winds and deadly flooding during these events.

Key Takeaways

The hurricane season commences on June 1st and extends through November 30th. This season is expected to be a very active season. Prepare Now.

REFLECTION OF HURRICANE IRMA & MARIA

The 2017 hurricane season brought unprecedented destruction to the U.S. Virgin Islands with two back-to-back Category 5 hurricanes. In early September, Hurricane Irma—one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded—battered the territory with sustained winds of over 185 mph, knocking out power and communication systems across St. Thomas, St. John, and neighboring islands. Just twelve days later, Hurricane Maria, also a Category 5 storm, made landfall, delivering a second catastrophic blow to St. Croix and Puerto Rico. The storm destroyed or severely damaged critical infrastructure, including homes, schools, and the island’s only hospital. In the aftermath, both territories faced extended curfews, widespread displacement, and months without electricity or reliable communication.

These storms underscore the vital importance of preparedness. When systems fail and assistance may be delayed, communities that plan ahead—by safeguarding infrastructure, training personnel, and maintaining emergency supplies—are far better equipped to respond, recover, and save lives. Preparedness isn’t optional; it’s the cornerstone of resilience in the face of disaster.
